Services and the\nschool alone cannot remove the disparity caused by differences in background.\nInstead, transfers of income are needed to support young people and combat\npoverty of families with children. The Good Holiday Spirit collection for\nimpoverished families with children in Finland by the Red Cross and the\nMannerheim League for Child Welfare will be launched on Thursday 21 November.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As children\ngrow up and become young people, the expenditure of the family increases due to\nstudies, sports and hobbies. However, the transfers of income will not\nincrease. Instead, low-income mothers and fathers must provide for their\nchildren with less resources compared to parents in wealthier families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 17th\nbirthday of a young person is an important turning point. That is when children\nstop receiving the child benefit, even though they have just moved from free\ncomprehensive education to upper secondary education, where a majority of the\nschool materials must be bought for the child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poverty\nwill have a significant impact on a young person\u2019s self-image, professional\naspirations and social relationships. Parents may not be able to support their\nchildren due to problems caused by low income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccording\nto studies, nearly one fifth of young people have had to narrow their selection\nof available study paths due to lack of money. Public debate seems to overlook\nthe fact that dropping out of upper secondary education may be the result of\ninsufficient funds,\u201d says <strong>Leena Suurp\u00e4\u00e4<\/strong>, the Manager of Finnish Red\nCross Youth Shelters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research\nshows that the poverty of parents will slow down the process of young people\nmoving out of the family home and to a new town for studies. On the other hand,\nliving together in close quarters may generate tensions between family members,\nresulting in young people having to move out of their family home before they\nare ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We must\nfight poverty in families with children with transfers of income<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading\nexpert of the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare <strong>Liisa Partio<\/strong> notes\nthat without upper secondary education, a person\u2019s earning power is permanently\nreduced. This results in poverty being hereditary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must\nsupport the educational aspirations of children from low-income families much\nmore efficiently than we have this far. This requires investments in student\nwelfare, student counselling and teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Partio and\nSuurp\u00e4\u00e4 stress that society must be able to offer families timely support in\nthe different stages of children\u2019s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMerely\nincreasing services will not be enough, though, unless we tackle issues with\nincome. We have to support people by improving the level of basic security and\nfamily allowances, such as the child benefit. Basic security must cover\nreasonable expenses. This is not the case currently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Food\nvouchers for 28,000 families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Good\nHoliday Spirit collection by the Finnish Red Cross and the Mannerheim League\nfor Child Welfare will be launched on Thursday 21 November. The collection is\norganised for the 23rd time now, and it partners with Ylen aamu morning TV, Yle\nRadio Suomi and Yle Radio Vega. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nproceeds from the collection go towards buying a total of 28,000 food vouchers\nfor impoverished families with children living in Finland to ensure that\nlow-income families may also enjoy the holiday spirit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ndecision on which families receive the vouchers is made by local municipal\nsocial services, child health clinics, school healthcare or diaconal work of\nthe parishes, who are in cooperation with the local Red Cross branch or\nassociation of the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare. The vouchers have a\nvalue of \u20ac70 and they can be used in the campaign&#8217;s partner stores operated by\nKesko, Lidl and the S Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection will continue until 24 December 2019. The Ylen aamu morning show will broadcast an opening programme from Helsinki Railway Station, featuring singer <strong>Saara Aalto <\/strong>on the opening day, 21 November.
