A survey targeted at the social and health care professionals who decide on the recipients of the vouchers shows that food shortage is not just a holiday period problem for low-income families, but an everyday one. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nholiday season, the Good Holiday Spirit collection organised by the Finnish Red\nCross and the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare distributed a total of 28,000\nfood vouchers to low-income families with children in Finland. The 70-euro\nvoucher allows parents to buy some food for their families\u2019 holiday table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A survey\nconducted by the Finnish Red Cross in November\u2013December shows that poverty is\nreflected in the refrigerators of low-income families outside of the holiday\nseason as well. Of the social services and health care professionals who\nresponded to the survey, one in four said that low-income families have to be\nfrugal about food or that their diets are inadequate due to poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey\nalso highlighted the need for food aid. Of the 108 social services and health\ncare professionals who responded to the survey, one in five mentioned that\nlow-income families with children rely on food aid to survive day to day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis tells\nus that the poorest families with children have to constantly rely on forms of\naid that are intended to be only temporary or a last resort to be used when all\nother safety nets fail. Basic social security should be raised to a level that\ncovers the basic necessities of all families with children, such as healthy\nfood,\u201d emphasises <strong>Maaret Alaranta<\/strong>, social well-being coordinator for the\nFinnish Red Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thank\nyou to the donors<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in\nprevious years, this year\u2019s Good Holiday Spirit collection was contributed to\nby both companies and private donors. We will know the final proceeds from this\nyear\u2019s collection in early 2020, after all the payments have been received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery\ndonation is important, as it is people\u2019s willingness to help that allows us to\nprovide aid where it is needed,\u201d says <strong>Regina Laur\u00e9n<\/strong>, fundraising\ncoordinator forthe Finnish Red Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI would like to extend our warmest thanks to\nall the donors and volunteers who participated in the collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Good\nHoliday Spirit collection was launched on 21 November. It was organised in\ncooperation with YLEn aamu, YLE Radio Suomi and YLE Radio Vega. Families have\nbeen able to use the vouchers to buy food from the shops of the campaign\npartners, i.e. K-food stores, Lidl and S Group grocery stores. This year\u2019s\ncollection was the 23rd of its kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The\nFinnish Red Cross organised a survey on the poverty of families with children\nin collaboration with the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare on 24 November\u20132\nDecember 2019. The survey was sent to nearly 350 social services and health\ncare professionals across the country who decide on the recipients of the Good\nHoliday Spirit vouchers. During the survey period, responses were received from\na total of 108 respondents.
